Gene Pool#62: Audiograft 2012

An audiolog of one part of this year’s Audiograft Festival at Oxford Brookes University. We hear from Max Eastley talking about his AHRC research post investigating Aeolian instruments, Stephen Cornford on his dismantled tape player exchanges with Ben Gwilliam and the resulting installation at Modern Art Oxford, performance extracts from “Guitar Drag” and “Cartridge Music”, plus Cremaster, Felicity Ford and Stavroula Kounadea.

Gene Pool#58: Stephen Cornford

Stephen Cornford in SARU StudioExchanging dismantled vintage cassette players in the post and coaxing sound from ancient media. Sound artist, Curator and SARU Research Fellow, Stephen Cornford talks about his projects in the run up to the 2012 AudioGraft Festival at Oxford Brookes University.

We hear extracts from his room installation of cassette players that amplify their own mechanisms “Binatone Galaxy” and improvised electronic performance of “Cartridge Music” with fellow Sonic Arts Research Unit staff member and artist, Paul Whitty.

Plus a spontaneous discovery of sounds from the old VCS3 synthesiser laying in the corner of the studio at SARU.

VCS3 Synthesiser at Oxford Brookes UniversityI’ve not posted about the Gene Pool podcast for a while, but I’m still rolling out the weekly episodes of media arts-talk on Soundart Radio 102.5FM and iTunes.

The 2012 season has had a slow start with a few technical issues with the stations web stream, but I’m blessed to still pretty content-rich and have some great material coming up between now and April 2012. My Twitter followers will already know about this, but after the 4step app test in Oxford a couple of weeks back, I went up to Oxford Brookes University to meet Stephen Cornford, Research Fellow and sound artist to talk about his own work and the forthcoming Audiograft 2012 Festival.

Stephen was a charming interviewee, kind, genuine and obviously immersed in his practice. I really meeting him and hearing about his work generating voices from the playback mechanisms of obsolete tape machines. A mighty side-note of my visit to the SARU studio was clapping eyes on the ancient VCS3 synthesiser in the corner of the room. Needless to say, we cranked it up for a short demonstration during the podcast.

Other shows in the pipeline for this season are a roundtable with dance artists involved in the 4step app, a catch-up with Helen Frosi of the SoundFjord Gallery to hear about the new fund raiser album that has released on Audio Gourmet and the latest waves that the sonic arts-focussed gallery has been making in London. One of the other projects that I’m really excited about at the moment is Digital Berkshire, where I’m working alongside a team of people involved in the digital/tech/social media industries in my county to create a friendly, networking event with guest speakers each month. My colleagues are truly well connected, so it’s very stimulating. This is a very timely project for the culture industry to get onboard with (though I don’t see too many people doing anything similar). I’ve always been on both side of the fence as a self employed digital producer, so hanging out with people who see the idiosincrasies of the funded culture section is definitely good for my sanity.

Digital Berkshire’s second event rolls out on 16th February, so we’ll be podcasting some of the material generated during that event too.
