Gene Pool#73 Sonic Season: Simon Whetham & Jan Hendrickse

Amazing recording of the first musical meeting of these two artists.

Globe trotting sound artist,  Simon Whetham and composer/wind player, Jan Hendrickse performed together as part of the “Embedded” season of live streamed “sofa concerts”.

hendricksewhetham03The duo performed a 45 minute set of spontaneous music, 30 minutes of which is captured in this Gene Pool episode. Simon Whetham mixes his original field recordings with live sound from an amplified metal bucket, fire grate and other objects. Jan Hendrickse uses a variety of winds, including bass flute with delicate electronic tones.

Crossover

Crossovers album coverPart of my performance in Simon Whetham’s “Active Crossover” event last year has just been released in a set by Portugese label, Cronica Electronica.

Based around the overlap between each performance where both musicians improvise a transition, the results can be inspired or hesitant as performers try to make a connection while an audience listens. My “crossover” was with Phil Julian/Cheap Machines certainly felt more like the former at the time, but the recording has been really nicely mastered by the Cronica label to bring out all of the detail and heavy bass coming from Phil’s tone generator units.

Coincidentally, I’ve just put a video I recorded of the same performance up on YouTube.

Gene Pool#50: The Ethometric Museum

Blurring the boundary of technological reality, The Ethometric Museum tips visitors into a post-Steam Punk mix of spiritualism and the New Science.

This episode of the Gene Pool features an exclusive recording of The Ethometric Museum, taken during the event at the Museum of the History of Science in Oxford.

Following on from his hugely successful large-scale event, “Siren”, sound artist Ray Lee assembles a collection of 40 handmade “ethometric” sound devices and presents a tour and demonstration of them during the performance.

Audio recording made by Felicity Ford.
