Part of my performance in Simon Whetham’s “Active Crossover” event last year has just been released in a set by Portugese label, Cronica Electronica.
Based around the overlap between each performance where both musicians improvise a transition, the results can be inspired or hesitant as performers try to make a connection while an audience listens. My “crossover” was with Phil Julian/Cheap Machines certainly felt more like the former at the time, but the recording has been really nicely mastered by the Cronica label to bring out all of the detail and heavy bass coming from Phil’s tone generator units.
Coincidentally, I’ve just put a video I recorded of the same performance up on YouTube.
I played a concert as part of Simon Whetham’s “Active Crossover” project a couple of weeks back, as I wrote a couple of posts ago. I really enjoyed getting back out to perform in public, there’s something about the real concert environment which tests the material in a way that can’t be duplicated otherwise.
I always love collaborating with other people, so the best part of the performance for me was the 10 minute “cross over” section where I improvised with Phil Julian/Cheap Machines. Phil was working with a tone generator and telephone pickup amplifying electronic sounds from the inside of his laptop, while I was making some lo-fi loops on my old Casio SK1 and using my electronic Theremin with some LED finger torches.
I’ve just made an episode of the “Gene Pool” radio show/podcast from the concert mix that Simon sent me and you can hear that over on the Digital Media Centre Podcast page.
Field recording meets contemporary composition, drone and home-brewed electronics in a live concert at The Rising Sun Arts Centre, Reading, as part of Simon Whetham‘s “Active Crossover” sound installation project.
This episode is a condensed mix created by Simon Whetham of all of the performances on the night from: Simon Whetham, Jonathan Coleclough, Felicity Ford, Mark Durgan, Martin Franklin & Cheap Machines.
The Gene Pool Radio Show is presented weekly at 7pm on Wednesdays on Soundart Radio 102.5FM. The podcast version can be delivered directly into your iTunes via subscription from our iTunes Channel.
